What is a radiator hose?
A radiator hose is the thick looking, flexible black hose made of rubber and composite material that is attached to the top of the radiator and runs into your engine block. It is secured by two metal rings with screws fasteners and is attached just below your motor's intake. It is responsible for circulating engine coolant or radiator fluid into the motor to cool it down.

What can go wrong with a radiator hose?
Like the common cold or flu, broken radiator hoses are one of the most frequently experienced car problems in existence. The most common radiator hose failures are a tear or break in the middle of the hose, a loose connector that allows fluid to leak, or a bound or tangled hose. The radiator hose usually ends up bursting if a connector is loose or there is a leak anywhere on the hose. The pressure builds up so severely that it can split the hose wide open spewing very hot radiator fluid all over your motor and onto the ground in large amounts. The car usually over heats minutes after the burst causing you to pull the classic maneuver of pulling over and opening the hood.

How do I know if I have a bad radiator hose?
If you receive any kind of warning or indicator that your hose is bad before it bursts, you are very, very lucky. Most often, the slightest, most difficult to notice crack or loose connection will expand and rip open under the pressure of the coolant and engine heat. In the rare instance you do get warning of a leak or problem, you will see radiator fluid on the ground, maybe a small amount of white smoke from under the hood while the motor is hot, a little overheating, or that distinct smell of radiator fluid.

How do I replace the radiator hose?
Replacing the radiator hose is very simple but can be very dangerous if you are not careful. It is very, very important to let your car and engine cool down before attempting to change your hose. Let your car cool down for 2 or more hours as the engine is a pressurized system that is designed to keep in heat. Once cool, pull your radiator cap off to release the pressure out of your radiator. Keep your head back and do not look down at the radiator cap. When opening the cap, keep a towel or rag around it and your hand just in case some hot coolant under pressure attempts to gush out. After the cap is off, then use a screwdriver to loosen the bolts around the metal ring on the radiator and the metal ring on the engine block. With a radiator hose produced specifically for your vehicle that fits the intricacies of your engine compartment, replace the old hose with the new one and be sure to screw the clamps on nice and tight.

Is there anything I can do in an emergency?
If your hose doesn't burst but has a severe leak or split, you can tape it up with high tension tape like duct or plumbing tape. Be sure to wrap several layers around the hose very tightly. If all or most of your coolant has leaked out, it is okay to temporarily use water in your radiator until you can get more coolant. Replace the hose and coolant right away.
