What is an oil pan?

The oil pan is typically located underneath your vehicle at the bottom of your engine block. It is made of metal but is not flat like some cooking pans. It is concave and looks more like a reservoir with a bump on it. The purpose of the oil pan is to hold or contain the motor oil that circulates through your engine. As the motor oil flows through engine components to assist in combustion, a good portion of it works its way down to the oil pan, especially when the car is off. The other oil stays within the engine block keeping the internal components properly coated. Once running again, your car will re-circulate the motor oil assuring proper lubrication.

What can go wrong with my oil pan?

The most common causes of oil pan problems are physical damage like bottoming out or hitting debris on the road. Another typical issue would be work gaskets which cause the oil pan to leak out vital engine lubrication. Oil pans can also begin to hold particles and corrosion brought in from your engine block and internal components, but those particles do not usually circulate back through the motor as there is an oil filter designed to keep them out.

How will I know I have a bad oil pan?

You will know you have a bad oil pan by noticing oil that has physically leaked onto the ground. With oil pan problems, you will usually not get the smell of burning oil or see any oil contact with the motor. The pan is designed to keep the large quantity of oil stored there away from your engine block. Oil pans will often get dented. There is usually no cause for alarm as the oil pan is sturdy enough to handle it. You would only need to act if you noticed it has been jarred loose, has an oily seal meaning there is a possible leak coming, or actually see oil leaking from a puncture or something similar.

I think I have seen the oil pan before

It's very likely that you have seen or interacted with your oil pan at some point. Whether you get your oil changed or you like to do it yourself, it's the spot where the oil is drained from your motor during any oil change. By removing a bolt on the bottom of the oil pan, the oil comes out allowing for additional or new motor oil to be added through the top of the motor in the valve covers. The oil filter is also located right next to the pan and is also changed during maintenance or repairs.

Do they make different oil pans?

They sure do. There are oil pans that fit different applications. Since they are so crucial to safety and operating your vehicle, it's important to have an oil pan that fits your car and how you drive your car. For those who enjoy driving off road, there are heavy duty pans made of thicker material with stronger bolts and seals to withstand more possible physical damage from rocks and other hazards. If running a big block performance motor, they have deeper oil pans which hold more oil to lubricate the additional cubic inches and to account for any situation where a sudden significant loss of oil may occur through one of the other high performance parts. If you face other extreme circumstances as part of your driving, there is most likely a pan to fit your needs.
