What is a fuel pressure regulator?

Typically located on or near your firewall and attached to your metal fuel line tubing, the fuel pressure regulator houses a spring operated valve that will open if it feels the excessive vacuum forces of too much fuel in the lines. It then allows the extra fuel to run into a reservoir where it will be safe and reduce the pressure in the lines. The fuel pressure regulator is responsible for keeping your fuel lines at a constant pressure rating while also preventing the use of too much fuel during acceleration, deceleration, and other emission heavy operations.

What can go wrong with a fuel pressure regulator?

Because of its simple design and dependence on vacuum forces, the fuel pressure regulator does not frequently have problems. If a problem does occur within the regulator, it will involve the spring valve and may mean that it can't close because of a clog, a worn spring, or maybe a leak due to corrosion. Other closely related fuel pressure gauge problems would be a clog or leak in the lines attached that impeded the flow of fuel or vacuum pressure through the lines.

How will I know there is a problem with my fuel pressure regulator?

You will know there is a problem with your fuel pressure regulator from several noticeable symptoms. There will most likely be hesitation during acceleration, excessive load up during deceleration which may cause backfiring or emission odor, and you may even experience a choking sensation like the fuel or air is being completely cut off from the motor at times. Some vehicles may give you a warning light or trouble code to identify the problem.

It sounds simple enough, right?

That's not necessarily true. If you have ever had a problem with you fuel lines, you can understand the gravity of the situation. It's very difficult to troubleshoot problems in your fuel lines. If your pressure gauge or fuel filter do not show easily detectable signs of failure, then you may end up following and inspecting your entire fuel line for the problem. It can take quite a lot of time when all is said and done. It is quite often a good idea to consult with a local mechanic or technician for troubleshooting or diagnosis.

Are there any tips that may help?

We can offer one quick and simple tip that may help you troubleshoot the function of your fuel pressure regulator. When testing, you can attach clear hose or tubing to the entry and exit points of the regulator. This will allow you to physically see any leaks or problems that may have otherwise been concealed.
