What is a hood strut?
A hood strut is the arm or mechanism that connects your hood to your car's body. They are usually located under the hood near the firewall in the very left and right corners. Some hood struts are like a hydraulic shock while others look like a home's door hinge with an extra metal spring attached for stronger tension and firmer hold.

Is it important?
Yes, it is quite important. The hood strut is typically the only connector between the body and the hood, and it is usually in the corner like a door hinge making it the only way to open the hood. Beyond that, it is important for safety as it keeps the very heavy hood from hitting someone who may be working under it.

Can a hood strut go bad?
A hood strut can definitely go bad. In circumstances that would also include damage done to other parts of the car, the hood strut can become detached. This makes the hood almost impossible to open or close and could possibly require expensive repairs. Most often, the hood strut wears down from prolonged use. The hydraulic cylinder loses pressure or the spring and hinge become rusted and stiff. Any of these problems will make it very difficult to open the hood.

What kinds of hood struts are available?
There are several different types of replacement hood struts available. The simplest choice is a factory or OEM replacement that is made to production specifications for your vehicle. There are also premium or high grade hood struts that are made of thicker, stronger material and will either have a larger spring or hydraulic valve to provide more assistance at heavier weights. Finally, there are automatic hood struts that open unassisted after a single remote click.

Can I replace the hood struts myself?
This can be done, but it can also be difficult. The most difficult part is getting access to the strut to remove it and replace it. For those cars where access is blocked or too difficult to find, it's best to take it to a local mechanic or dealership. If access is readily available, then the struts can be changed by removing all the connecting bolts, removing the hood, attaching the new struts to the hood, and then replacing the hood by connecting the new strut connectors to the body with the bolts and assembly.
