Do you offer colder range thermostats?
Most of the thermostats we offer are the stock temperature range. There is an exception to this. To see if we offer colder thermostats, please search using our catalog above for your application.
How can I replace my thermostat?
Replacing a thermostat is not a very tough job, but it's messy, and could be a pain. Below, we will go into detail about replacing a thermostat for most cars and trucks, but for your specific application, we recommend asking in our car forum.
Start by purchasing a new thermostat in our catalog, along with a thermostat gasket to ensure proper sealing and no leaks. We also recommend purchasing a gasket sealant like a RTV sealer. Make sure you also have a 50/50 coolant/water mixture to top off your system when you're done. Before you begin, make sure your engine is absolutelty COLD. Never do this on a warm or hot engine.
Find a shop towel or thick rag such as a bath towel, and put it over your radiator cap. Open the radiator cap through the towel, so if any coolant spills, the towel should catch it. Once you have released any pressure in the system, you now need to find the thermostat. The thermostat is usually located at the end of the upper radiator hose where the hose meets the engine. There is usually a thermostat housing or cover that is secured down with 2 or 3 bolts. Remove the radiator hose off of this housing using a screwdriver, or a clip clamp. The radiator hose might be stuck on there, so a good trick is to twist and turn the hose until it "snaps" off of the thermostat housing. Be careful, because when you pull the hose off, there will be a substaintial amount of coolant that pours out. Try to place something on the floor such as a towel to catch it.
Unbolt the two or three bolts on each side of the cover, and lift the cover up. You will see the thermostat there. Notice the way the thermostat is positioned. You will want to put the new thermostat in, the same way, not upside down. Take a picture with your phone in case you don't remember. You'll want to next remove the old RTV or gasket off of the edges of the thermostat cover. This is important, because if you don't do this, when you put in the new thermostat, and also the cover, it will leak. The surface needs to be as clean as possible. Use sandpaper or a scrub cloth to get off any final bits and pieces. Make sure no bits and pieces get down into the engine. Once done, put the new thermostat into it's place, and also the new gasket, making sure the bolt holes line up. Spread your RTV or gasket sealant on the cover that makes contact with the engine, and also on the base of the cover. Place the gasket on the cover base, and then gently put the cover over the thermostat. Tighten the bolts back, and replace the radiator hose.
Before starting the engine, give the sealant time to dry. We recommend 6-12 hours, but the sealant package should say how long it requires. The longer the better. Once it's dry, top off any coolant/water mix, and then run the engine until your radiator fan turns on. We recommend to leave the radiator cap off while the car warms up, to let any air bubbles escape. Do not fill with more coolant until the engine cools down. Do not open the radiator cap once you turn on the engine.
