What is a starter?
Also known as the starter motor, it is indeed an electric driven small motor that spins the crankshaft so that combustion can begin and the engine can start. Combustion engines need the motor to be turning and cylinders to already be in motion before it is able to start. When a key is put into the ignition, it activates the electrical current in the starter which then feeds through a relay, known as the solenoid, and pushes a pinion gear out from the starter. The pinion gear is already spinning from the power of the electric motor and it connects to the flywheel which in turn spins the flywheel and crankshaft to begin starting the motor.
Have starters always been that way?
Yes and no. Yes, the combustion engine has always needed to have the crankshaft spinning before it could start. The very first engine required the same. No, we didn't always have electric starter motors comprised of gears. The first version was the hand crank seen in old photos and movies where someone actually stood out in front of the car and turned the crank, like a jack in the box, so the motor would start. The next evolution moved it inside the passenger compartment of the car but consisted of the driver pumping a pedal on the floor to move the crankshaft. It was after these versions that we saw a free standing electric motor that evolved into what we have today.
What can go wrong with my starter motor?
Usually because of the location of the starter motor, it can get corroded or have components of the electric motor clogged so that it stops working. It's quite common to have the starter motor located under the vehicle where it has easy access to a battery connection and the flywheel. Because it is there, it may get dirty or damaged very easily. It can also fail like any other electric motor that wears out from use or gets a short.
How will I know that I have starter problems?
Obviously, you won't be able to start your car. But, this is a valid question because the starter motor doesn't always just quit. If it's starting to have problems, the starter will get louder and make a whining sound while starting. It will also lose stable current which causes it to spin the flywheel in surges instead of in a consistent manner. Another good indicator is an occasional clicking sound when you operate the starter. It is usually a sign of bad things to come. If your starter does not completely quit, you will know it's not the battery if you turn the key and the motor does absolutely nothing, but you can see your other electrical equipment, like your radio, running at normal or close to normal capacity.
In a pinch
In those moments when you are stuck out in the middle of nowhere with a broken starter and just need to get moving you can always consider this emergency tactic. You should put the car into the neutral gear, push it manually to get it going as fast as you can, slip it suddenly into gear, and at the same time, try to start your motor. This obviously only works in a manual transmission where you can keep the clutch suppressed then ease it out when you attempt to start the car. Be careful not to hurt yourself while pushing the car – we don't recommend doing anything where you could end up getting hurt.
