How do I know if my headlight bulb is out?
This sounds like a funny question, but you see people everyday driving with headlights that aren’t working. We assume that these people know, but that isn’t always the case. Especially with today’s requirements around daytime driving lights, sensor based on and off switches, and the simple brightness of just one headlight, it’s difficult to notice a broken headlight or even pay attention. Most cars do not have sensors that will alert you that the bulb is bad, so it’s best to look for a reduced field of vision at night, dimmer lights, to pay attention to the headlight reflections when pulling into the garage, check for yourself every now and then by walking around the car, and of course, take notice if other drivers are trying to signal to you that something is wrong.
Are headlight bulbs easy to replace?
There is a broad range of answers to this question. It really depends on the make, model, and year of your vehicle. For instance, if you are driving an American manufactured car from the 1960’s, it’s quite easy to open the hood, unscrew the bulb by reaching down behind the headlights, and simply replace it with a new bulb. Most of today’s cars require the full headlight assembly to be removed to access only one of the lights contained within the assembly. Some assemblies are easy to remove with a few bolts or screws where others are more challenging. Consult your owner’s manual or your local dealership service department to learn more.
What can happen if I don’t replace a bad headlight bulb?
Mechanically, there is not much that can go wrong from a dead headlight bulb. In some older vehicles with faulty wiring, it was just another grounding point for current to be drawn out which weakens the overall flow of electricity, but that hasn’t been a problem in production vehicles for decades. Your main point of concern is reduced visibility and awareness while driving in the dark which endangers you and your passengers, and of course, you can receive a “fix it” ticket from local law enforcement if your lights are not functioning.
What are Xenon or HID bulbs?
You have probably noticed these lights on other cars while driving in the dark. A look into your review mirror reveals a bright, luminescent set of lights that typically have a hue of blue, gold, or amber. These are Xenon or HID headlights. They differ from standard headlights because they use halogen gas trapped inside the bulb with the filament to burn brighter. HID lights can be purchased as just bulbs or they come in replacement kits that include new reflectors and possibly new clear outer casings to go over the lights. If you are looking for that eye catching brightness that you occasionally get mesmerized by on the street, the kit is best way to achieve that and can be purchased for your specific vehicle.
What are the benefits of HID or Xenon lights?
Popular with the import tuner crowd and stock on many European manufactured brands, Xenon or HID lights can offer a broader field of vision while driving in the dark, that subtle color or tint which can actually make your surroundings appear in better focus and more crisp, and a slight safety advantage of being easier to notice by other drivers while driving at night. Other advantages would be strictly cosmetic as the color may match your paint scheme or you may like the appearance of the new kit after it’s installed.
