How do I replace my oxygen sensor?
An oxygen sensor is straight forward to replace. Sometimes also known as the o2 sensor, you can have up to 3 or more oxygen sensors in your vehicle. Most modern cars and trucks have at least 2, with one located before the catalytic converter typically on the downpipe, or on the exhaust manifold sometimes also known as the header, and after the catalytic converter. To replace the o2 sensor behind your catalytic converter, simply unscrew the sensor from the exhaust pipe, and unplug it from the connector. Make sure not to strip the sensor, as it could be very sensitive if you use the wrong size wrench to remove it. You would follow the same steps to replace the one before the catalytic converter, but it is typically tougher to get to due to location.
Are the front and rear o2 sensors interchangeable?
Because each sensor is there for a different purpose, they are not interchangeable.
What does the oxygen sensor do? Why does my car not pass smog with a bad o2 sensor?
Many times, if an oxygen sensor goes bad, then your car will not pass smog, and have a very high emissions reading. The reason for this, is the oxygen sensor is responsible for reading how much oxygen to fuel there is in the exhaust, to determine if your car is running too rich, or too lean, and helps the ECU adjust properly. If the exhaust gas is determined to be too lean, your car would run too hot, and melt engine parts such as pistons and valves. If it's too rich, you are burning too much gas, so you could foul your spark plugs, and cause your car to have bad emissions. The rear o2 sensor, behind the catalytic converter, is simply responsible to ensure the catalytic converter is working, and could throw a check engine light if it is broken.
What kind of o2 sensors do you offer?
We have both OEM factory replacement o2 sensors, and also universal sensors that need to have the harness spliced for install. The installation on these is much tougher, but the cost is usually significantly less than a factory sensor. All factory sensors come with a plug and play harness, and install in minutes.
Where can I get more info on installing an o2 sensor?
We setup a car forum for you to be able to discuss repairs and installs such as o2 sensors.
