What is a brake caliper?
The brake caliper is a mechanism on disc brake systems that acts like a vice grip or claw that grips the brake rotor when the brakes are activated. When the brake pedal is suppressed, it activates a plunger located within the master cylinder. That plunger pushes brake fluid down through the brake lines. The fluid then makes the caliper suppress or close thus pushing a bracket holding the brake pad against the rotor. It would be like grabbing a spinning bicycle tire with your hand to stop it from spinning.

Can brake calipers go bad?
Brake calipers are extremely durable parts, but they can occasionally fail. They can wear from prolonged use, especially for those who drive often through inclement weather conditions. They can also be affected by old or dirty brake fluid, by impact damage like in a car accident, or if there is a pad or rotor malfunction. Calipers are the most expensive part of the brake assembly, except for the master cylinder.

How do I know if my calipers are wearing or going bad?
Faulty or worn calipers will typically grip the rotor less effectively reducing your stopping power. It's a good bet that if you have weak stopping power combined with less visible brake dust, no squealing from a brake indicator, and no loss of brake pedal pressure, your caliper should be checked out. It can also cause wheel chatter during braking or cause unwanted wear patterns in your rotors. In that case, you'll feel an odd sensation when stopping like your brakes are warped. In extreme situations, they can make creaking or popping sounds.

Can I replace the brake calipers myself?
Replacing a brake caliper can be done, but we urge it to be done with caution. After your wheel is removed, the brake line will need to be disconnected, the caliper bolts removed, and caliper gently lifted off the top of the brake rotor. Replace the new caliper in the same position with new fasteners. Be sure to bleed your brake lines to ensure there are no air pockets in your system. Please test the pressure and watch your calipers open and close several times before re-attaching your wheel and driving.

Are there performance calipers?
There are some great performance options for brake calipers. Performance calipers offer stronger construction, tighter pressure, and a much better grip on the brake rotor. They offer superior performance when the whole system is replaced with new brake pads, a bigger rotor with vent holes drilled into it, and new calipers for better grip. Calipers can also be painted for added appeal when seen through those after market rims.
