What is a cylinder head gasket?

Also known as just a head gasket, the cylinder head gasket is a high pressure rated gasket that sits between the engine block and cylinder heads. Its purpose is to help maintain pressure in the cylinders for combustion and to keep coolant or oil from leaking into the cylinder heads. It is referred to as the most important gasket on your car and has stringent quality standards mandated to all manufacturers because of that fact.

Why is it considered so important?

The cylinder head gasket is viewed with such importance because of what can happen if there is a problem with it. Typically, the heat and pressure from the combustion of your motor is what causes problems with a head gasket. Occurrences are more frequent on cars with aluminum engine blocks because aluminum conducts and radiates more heat breaking the content of the gasket down more quickly. If you do get a broken, torn, or worn down gasket, then a few different things are likely to occur. The first would be a loss of combustion pressure. The next would be coolant or oil leaking into your cylinder heads. The final would be the most extreme with the heat and pressure causing your cylinder heads to wear or eventually crack.

How do I know I have a bad gasket?

There are several ways that you could find out about a bad head gasket. You may see a sudden or slightly faster than gradual loss in engine pressure. This may or may not be detectable from your dashboard gauges. The engine may overheat which is the most common of all side effects to this problem. If coolant or oil leak into your heads, the engine will emit white smoke. Finally, if there is more serious wear to the gasket, it can allow the heat and pressure to overwhelm the block and heads and allow them to crack.

Are all head gaskets the same?

Not really. There are a few different varieties of head gaskets. The most common gasket in today's cars would be the MLS gasket which stands for Multiple Layer Steel. That usually means there are three layers of steel pressed together with a rubber like sealant to keep it safe. There are gaskets made of copper that function similar to MLS gaskets may need an O-ring added to be as affective. An O-ring is a copper ring welded around the gasket, and with an O-ring in place, the copper gasket is actually known to outperform most other gasket applications. Other designs include the older composite gaskets made of asbestos and graphite or the elastomeric version which uses a steel plate with rubber heads.

How do I know which one is right for my engine?

The biggest thing to consider when purchasing a gasket is how you actually plan to run your motor and your car. If you are an average to heavy mileage driver who doesn't seek high horsepower with high RPM's or off road terrain, then using factory approved MLS replacement gaskets is more than adequate. There are even MLS gaskets that are sold on the aftermarket that accommodate performance packages and will perform up to standard. For those with race motors or aluminum blocks, take a look at what copper gaskets with an O-ring can do for you. You may still end up with an MLS gasket, but it's worth a look since the reputation of the copper gasket is so strong. You will most likely avoid the older composite and elastomeric gaskets altogether as the composite is made of hazardous material and the elastomeric was designed for certain European applications.
