What is a clutch disc?
The clutch disc is often referred to as the most integral part of the clutch assembly. It lies between the flywheel and the pressure plate and is responsible for the rotation of both until the plate is disengaged. It provides the friction and pressure needed to rotate the components as necessary.

Do clutch discs go bad?
Clutch discs can definitely wear down and become less effective. Since they are made of the same composite material seen on brake pads, they will eventually wear down over time due to the pressure and friction regularly applied to them. On rare occasions, the clutch disc can completely fail or break due to extreme tension or a malfunction in one of the other clutch components.

How do I know that I have a bad clutch disc?
Since your clutch disc provides a connection with friction and tension between the flywheel and the pressure plate, you would notice any symptoms that are a result of reduced friction. This would include a slipping sensation, an occasional clunking sound or sensation, and in some cases, there is even a burning smell that resembles the odor of brake pads that are overheated.

Are there replacements available?
There are replacement clutch discs available. The most obvious is the OEM clutch disc replacement that is designed and manufactured to factory specifications. This clutch disc is a dependable, solid replacement returning your clutch assembly to the level of friction it had leaving the assembly line, minus the effect of wear that has occurred to other parts of the clutch assembly. There is also some performance and after market clutch discs made of a stronger composite material that were tested at higher rates of temperature and pressure. They provide more tension and friction for stronger, smoother shifting.

Replacing a clutch disc sounds tricky - do I have some other options?
Absolutely. A good option to replacing a clutch disc, which is part of a complex assembly, is to buy a clutch kit. The clutch kit comes with a new pressure plate and clutch disc already together to reduce installation time. Performance applications come with kits that can increase your friction level anywhere from 30% to 90%. Clutch kits are also available in aluminum and are just as durable, if not more, than factory replacements.
