What is a brake master cylinder?
The brake master cylinder is a part that looks like a container with a pump attached to it and is located in front of the driver connected to the firewall. When the brake pedal is suppressed, it activates a plunger within the master cylinder which then pushes brake fluid through the brake lines. Being a sealed and pressurized system, pushing the fluid through the lines causes the brakes to be activated.

How do I know if it's going bad?
There are several signs that alert you to the fact that your master cylinder needs to be replaced. The first would be either an occasional or consistent loss of brake pressure. This comes from fluid not being circulated properly in the system. You may also feel brake chatter from inconsistent pressure, and in rare cases, the master cylinder will make a thumping or popping noise. It today's vehicles, a malfunctioning master cylinder should cause a dashboard indicator to come on.

Is it dangerous to let this go?
Yes, it is extremely dangerous to let a master cylinder problem go. The master cylinder controls the pressure and power behind your brakes. Any loss of that pressure or presence of air in the line can render your brakes absolutely useless no matter what speed you are traveling or what road you are on.

Can I replace the master cylinder myself?
Yes, this can be done, but we advise that you consult a professional before doing so. Many problems can arise from replacing the master cylinder. You have to disconnect your brake pedal, empty your brake lines of all fluid, and then disconnect your lines. The master cylinder can be difficult to access in the engine compartment, but if you do have access it should be easily to physically remove. Once the new cylinder is in it' place, you need to reconnect the brake pedal, add fluid to your lines and system, and then pressure test your system. Please consult a professional.

Are there different kinds of master cylinders?
There are enhanced, aftermarket master cylinders available. The benefits are mainly different feelings of pressure in the brake pedal and stronger cylinders to accommodate high performance applications. High performance cylinders have a higher level of pressure, which means quicker and stronger response. They also facilitate better grip when using oversized rotors or drums.
