How often should I change my engine oil?
We're sticking to the old school rule of changing your oil every 3,000 miles. With synthetic motor oil, and better quality oil filters, you can go longer, but why? For peace of mind, and not very much money, you can be sure you're keeping your oil clean and contaminant free. Plus, you would be warned quicker to any engine problems by noticing if your engine oil has abnormally high amounts of engine particles. We recommend to pick up a good set of jack stands, oil drain pan, and simple tools to help you along the way.

How can I change my engine oil myself?
Changing the oil in your engine is rewarding, simple, and a good activity to do with your kids to show them the basics of auto maintanence. Every car's oil filter is located in a different place, and every car requires different quarts of oil, so please check your owners manual, or please ask in our car forum to find out instructions for your specific application. Below we will describe the basic steps for changing the oil in your engine in our quick DIY or Do It Yourself Guide:

Start off by making sure you have all of the tools you need. Most oil drain plugs are 12, 14 or 17mm. We recommend that you have a quality oil filter, quality engine oil, a good oil drain pan, a new oil drain plug gasket, and an oil funnel.

If your engine is cold, you would want to warm it up, to get it flowing. Let the car idle for about 10 minutes, as warm oil drains faster than cold oil, and more of the oil will come out if it's warm. Let the car sit for maybe 15-20 minutes, so the oil is not too hot, and then raise the car by driving onto a ramp, or jack the car up.

We recommend to pop your hood open, and put the new bottles of oil around the outside of the engine compartment, so you don't forget to fill the engine back up with oil. Now that you're ready, we can start to change the oil.

Once the car is on jackstands and fully supported, get under the car and under the engine. Look for the oil pan, and on the oil pan you will notice there is a drain plug that is on the bottom of it. Consult our forum for the exact location of yours. Grab your oil drain pan, and put it under the oil drain plug. Grab your socket or wrench, and turn the oil drain plug counter clockwise to loosen the drain plug. Once the plug is removed, you will notice the old oil rushing out. Let the oil drain into the pan. Get out from under the car, and remove the old drain plug gasket, and put on the new one. This will prevent any leaks from that area. Then, locate the oil cap on top of the engine. Undo this cap, so the engine oil will flow faster into the drain pan below. Once you do this, go back under the car with your oil drain plug. Once the old oil stops leaking out, plug the oil pan back with the drain plug with the new gasket. Always put the bolt in by hand to prevent any stripping or cross threading. Tighten the bolt to factory spec, usually around 20 foot lbs of torque. Don't overtighten!

Now that you drained the oil out of the engine, it's time for the oil filter. The oil filter's job is to catch any dirt in the oil as it circulates through the engine, so you definately want to replace this oil filter each time you change your oil. Position your oil drain pan under the oil filter, and simply twist the old oil filter off. Wipe down the area where the oil filter was attached, and ensure there is no rubber ring attached on the engine. The rubber ring should have come off with the old oil filter. Grab the new oil filter, and rub some oil on the rubber ring to lubricate it. Put the new filter in it's place, and wipe down any excess oil.

You're all done under the car. Get out from under the car, and grab your oil funnel. Put this funnel into the open filler area, and pour in the new oil. Check your manual for correct capacity, or ask in our forum. Once you fill in the oil, you're done! Replace the oil cap. Wipe up any spilled oil. Pour the old oil into a plastic container, and dispose of it properly in a recyling center.

Congrats, you now have fresh oil! Write down the mileage of your car, and repeat every 3,000 miles!

How many oil filters do I need?
You only need one oil filter, but we recommend to buy a few at a time, so you always have them when you need them. Same with the oil drain plug gaskets.
