What is the difference between performance brake pads and replacement brake pads?
For some cars, such as performance sports cars, the brake pads that come with your car from the factory are already
considered high performance. For cars like this, such as BMW, we offer equal or better performing pads that are
designed to be direct replacements, and work with the factory brake system such as the brake rotors, and the brake caliper. For other cars that are not
designed with performance in mind, we offer brake pads that are significantly higher quality and grip to ensure you
have quick and secure stops, and works with all ABS systems.
What is a ceramic brake pad?
Ceramic brake pads are premium, and are designed to offer very low brake dust, low noise, and extremely high
performance. Usually, ceramic brake pads work well with ABS system, and often enhance the performance of your ABS
system. Ceramic pads are also easier on your rotors. We carry many different brands of these, and one of our most
popular is the Akebono Ceramic Brake pads.
What is the best way to break in my break pads?
One of the most important things you can do, is to properly break in your new brake pads, or have them set
correctly against your rotor. We recommend to install the pads, and then make 6 to 10 stops from about 35 miles
per hour, with moderate brake pressure. Once you have used this to warm up the brake pads, we recommend to make an
additional 3 stops from about 45 miles per hour. Each one of these stops should be done with moderate brake
pressure, do not drag the brakes and do this slowly. You need to ensure the pads are warmed up. Once you do this,
give your car 15 minutes to let the brakes cool down. Once you let them cool, you are ready to go! This process
ensures the pads are ready for the best performance.
Why do my brakes squeal? What causes this noise?
It's very annoying, and often embarrassing, to have your brakes squeal, and make a loud noise every time you push on
them. Sometimes the squeal can simply show that you need to service your brake system, and the noise comes from a
lack of friction material. You should also check your brake caliper, and make sure your brake pads fit good into
the caliper. Many times when the brake pads are being installed, the installer does not install new shims or anti
-rattle clips. This can cause that noise too. Loose lug nuts, caliper hardware, dirt caught between the
rotor and the pad, heat cracked or worn rotors, and a poorly surfaced rotor (another reason we recommend new
rotors). Brake squeal is typically caused by vibration between the brake pads, rotors, and brake calipers.
Usually, Semi Metallic and Metallic brake pads cause noise due to the metallic ingredients in the pads.
What can I do to prevent brake squeal with my new rotors and pads?
These steps will allow you to do the best you can to prevent brake squeal. Make sure you get brand new rotors. If
you want to resurface them, make sure they are resurfaced evenly. Wash the brake rotor of any dirt or debris when
installing, and install the pads securely with all ships and equipment to ensure a snug fit. Follow our break in
procedure with new brake pads. Put a thin layer of silicone "anti-squeal" brake lubrication on the back of the
brake pads during installation.
