Where is my throttle position sensor located?
For every car and truck, it's differently, but usually it is located on the throttle body. We recommend to ask in our car forum, as other people who have experience with replacing the sensor, or the location of the sensor can help you.
What is a throttle position sensor?
A throttle position sensor, also known as a TPS sensor is usually located on the throttle body and many times is included as one unit. On cars or trucks where the throttle position sensor can be removed, or is a seperate unit, it is typically electronically controlled to tell the car's computer or ECU at what position the throttle is. Depending on the position of the throttle, the computer can determine how much to accelerate. When the sensor goes bad, you can run into hesitation issues, stalling, and the car simply not starting.
How can I adjust my throttle position sensor?
The good thing with modern engines and technologies is that more and more of the sensors in your car can be adjusted. The TP Sensor or TPS sensor happens to be one of these. Adjustment for each one varies, so please ask in our car forum for help adjusting your specific sensor. Below we will discuss a sample adjustment, so you know what is involved, but the specs and range might not be recommended for your vehicle. Ask in our forum for specific questions.
How to adjust many TPS sensors
- First we recommend to diagnose the problem. Locate your throttle position sensor, and disconnect the harness. There is usually only one plug.
- Using a voltage gauge, check the resistance between the proper terminals to ensure that the voltage changes when opening the throttle body manually.
Once you determine if your sensor is out of range, but funtioning, you can adjust it by following these general guidelines. Please remember, your specific vehicle will be different valued.
- Install the new or old sensor in it's location, but leave the bolts loose.
- Connect the harness back to the sensor
- Start the engine, and ensure the car is fully warmed up
- Measure the voltage output using your voltmeter
- adjust the TPS sensor by turning it until the output voltage is within spec
- Tighten your mounting bolts, and disconnect your harness for a few seconds then reconnect it.
Are your TPS sensors direct replacement?
Yes. Our TPS sensors are a direct replacement for your car. Some sensors may need to be adjusted, so we recommend professional installation, though many of our clients are able to install the sensor, and drive the car normally. Since the sensor is adjustable, many times simply removing the old one, and installing the new one causes the new sensor to be in a position that is out of range, so a professional adjustment is recommended.
