What is an ignition coil?

An ignition coil is a metal coil, similar to a tesla coil but not exactly the same, that is protected by a thick plastic or composite housing. The job of the ignition coil is to take the low voltage created by the battery and amplify it to the thousands of volts needed to run the car and its components. There will be a thick conducting wire run into the coil which comes directly from the spark of the battery. The coil then routes that spark through the ignition systems that fire the spark plugs.

Are there different applications of the ignition coil?

Absolutely. In older cars, the coil would still get its spark from the battery, but it would then route it to a distributor which relied on a rotor to rotate the spark to each cylinder connection. Firing off of ignition points, the electricity is then routed to the spark plugs. In later designs, the coil operated in the same fashion but sent the spark to an HEI distributor that didn't use points. In today's vehicles, the application of the coil is vastly different. Coils now sit right on top of the spark plugs or spark plug wires and route current transferred from the battery directly to where it is needed. Most of the time, its one ignition coil for each cylinder, but some car makers will run two valves off of one ignition coil. The new system removes the need for a distributor, rotor, distributor cap, and ignition points. It allows the car's ECU to control the firing order.

What can go wrong with a coil?

The typical cause of problems for ignition coils would be corrosion from air flow or exposure to any chemicals, lubricants, solvents, or cleaners in common use around the motor. The connecting points will get corroded causing a lower grade spark and possibly intermittent spark. Coils will occasionally fail altogether internally becoming useless, but this is rare. In older cars with distributors and ignition points, coils sometimes overheat from current strength and would melt the wires connected to it.

How do I know if I am having coil problems?

If you have a complete coil failure, it would be easy to tell as your car won't start. If you have the more common corrosion problem, then it all comes down to a weaker and intermittent spark as the transmission of your electrical current will be disrupted. Symptoms of this problem include hesitation while starting the car, weak throttle response during acceleration, rough idle, misfiring, backfiring, and dim or weak accessories like the headlights and radio.

What does a performance coil do?

A performance coil has one primary purpose with a few added advantages. The primary purpose is to transform the electricity of the battery into a hotter spark than what a stock coil would provide. This is great for those vehicles with MSD or other race distributors, with enlarged fuel injector ports, a custom engine displacement, forged racing pistons, or many other race applications. It provides the spark needed to maximize the performance of the ignition system. Without the proper set up of supporting components for a high performance ignition coil, it can actually be harmful to your system. If not harmful and the system is equipped to handle the spark, the benefits available would be longer lasting coil life, better protection in extreme circumstances, and less corrosion.
