What is a clutch master cylinder?
Typically located against your vehicle's firewall below or next to the brake system master cylinder, the clutch master cylinder is a hydraulic pump with a plunger, like your brakes, that pushes fluid down through pressurized lines to operate the clutch. Since this is a sealed system, the fluid is the catalyst for engagement and disengagement of the clutch while shifting.

What can go wrong with the master cylinder?
The master cylinder can typically have a few different problems that can cause it to malfunction. The first would be a leak. There can be leaks caused by a worn master cylinder gasket, from a connecting point that has also worn down, or from physical damage made to the cylinder or reservoir from any number of causes like a car accident. Worn gaskets or connectors can also cause a loss of pressure which would affect clutch performance. Finally, the plunger could break or fail also causing problems.

How do I know if my master cylinder is bad?
There are a few ways to tell that something is wrong with your clutch master cylinder. The first, and most common, is that you feel a slow and gradual loss of pressure when engaging the clutch pedal. It will slowly push down to the floor and typically not rise back up as there is no pressure there to push it. Other indicators include leaks that are noticeable on the ground below the vehicle or by the smell of clutch fluid burning on hot components. Finally, you may encounter slipping or what could be classified as a jagged response to engaging the clutch. This can also be called chatter.

Can I replace the clutch master cylinder?
You can definitely replace the master cylinder, but it has been known to be a very challenging task. Please consult your owner's manual or talk to a local mechanic before getting started. Similar to replacing a brake master cylinder, the lines transferring the fluid need to be disconnected as well as the connection to the clutch pedal. The connection to the pedal should be easy to identify as it should be running directly into the firewall. Be sure to carefully remove the reservoir and bleed the system just like you would your brakes to remove any dangerous air pockets. Once the new part is ready, re-attach it according to the order above, fill the system with fluid, and test your pressure to make sure it's working.

Is there preventative maintenance that will help?
Maintenance is crucial to the longevity of your parts and to ensure you don't have to spend money on costly last minute repairs. You can maintain your clutch system similar to your brake system. It's important to have it checked, always make sure there is adequate pressure, have the fluid flushed at the factory recommended intervals, and try to keep the system clean.

When replacing the clutch master cylinder, you might also need to replace the clutch slave cylidner.
