What is the difference between an air mass sensor and air mass meter?
There is no difference. The names are different based on some manufactures, but they are both sensors that calculate incoming air flow. Check our catalog above to see if your car or truck manufacture refers to this part as the air mass sensor or the air mass meter. Sometimes this part is also called a MAF, MAS, Mass Air Flow Sensor or Mass Flow Sensor.

What is the process for replacing the air mass sensor?
This part is very easy to replace. Below we will describe the basic process for replacing this air mass meter, but for your specific application, we suggest to discuss in our car forum. Make sure you get a quality replacement from our catalog. The sensor is very sensitive, and requires the right calibration that you don't get by buying inferior sensors at local auto parts stores.

Steps to replace your air mass meter
  1. First you will need to locate the meter or sensor. Typically, the air mass sensor is located next to the air filter housing, and is attached to the factory air box on one end, and the air mass meter hose on the other end.
  2. The air mass sensor will have a harness plug attached to it. Simply unplug this harness. Do not forget to plug this back in. If you do not plug this in, the car might be either hard to start, or will start fine, and then not want to idle or rev.
  3. Remove the air filter box, and then disconnect the air intake hose clamp from between the air mass sensor and the air intake hose.
  4. On many modern vehicles, you will notice that the air mass sensor is literally bolted to the air box. The only way to unbolt is, is to take the air box apart, and remove the 4 or more bolts that are connected on the inner part of the air intake box.
  5. Once you disconnect everything, you will be left with the air mass meter. There is usually an o-ring that goes between your air mass sensor and the air box. We recommend to hold on to this, and put it on the new sensor if it does not already come with a new o-ring.
  6. Install the new air mass sensor the opposite of the removal of the factory part. There is usually no calibration required, as the computer or ECU will automatically calibrate it when you turn on your car or truck the next time.
Why does an air mass sensor go bad?
Usually, the air mass meter goes bad because it either got water on it, or due to a dirty air filter. When the air filter gets dirty, it can allow dirt and dust to pass through, and when this happens, the dirt and dust usually ends up stuck on the honeycomb of the air mass sensor, or on the actual diode that reads the air flow. This causes all kinds of damage because your ECU can not accurately calculate the air flow going into your engine.

Do you offer performance air mass meters?
We do offer performance parts for various applications where applicable, and where you do not necessarily need to recalibrate your computer to take advantage of this. Please check our performance catalog for all of our racing equipment.
