How do I replace my fuel filter?
It's pretty easy to replace your fuel filter, but do you do need to follow some basic rules to ensure you have a smooth replacement. Please note that the instructions below are a basic overview for those of you who are mechanically inclined, but for those of you who are new, please ask in our car forum to find out instructions for your specific application. The fuel filter is often overlooked because its one of those parts that you may never have to replace. It really depends on the quality of the gas in your area, dust, dirt, and driving conditions. The fuel filter is important, because it prevents contaminants from travening past your fuel filter into your fuel injectors or carburetor.
One of the most important steps is to relieve the fuel pressure in the fuel system. If you do not follow this step, you could have a pressurized fuel system spray you with fuel when you unbolt the fuel filter. The fuel pump has a fuse that you need to locate, and pull. If for some reason, you do not have a fuel pump fuse, you can either find a relay, or unclip the power from the fuel pump. Once you are sure the fuel pump has no power, try to start your car. The car will try to catch on, and might even run for a second or two, but then should quickly die. This is because the fuel pump is not supplying the engine, so the pressurized fuel was used up in the system. Now that you do this, you can start to unbolt the fuel filter. We still recommend to wear eye protection at this point.
On fuel injection cars, you will notice that there is an in and an out on the fuel filter. The bolts that hold down the fuel lines here are going to be different sizes. Make sure you use the correct sizes or you can end up stripping your fuel filter, and then having to go through some not-so-fun steps to get this fixed. Once you get the right size wrenches, put them in place, and cover everything with rag to try and catch any possible fuel spray.
Hold the wrench on the filter, and turn the other wrench counter clockwise until the banjo fitting comes out. At this point, you might need new fuel filter seals when putting the new fuel filter on. The old fuel filter will still be full of gas, so be careful as you will spill gas when moving the old fuel filter out of the way. Re-install the new fuel filter using the reverse directions. For any other questions, please ask in our car forum.
How often do I need to replace the fuel filter?
We recommend to replace it every 30,000 miles. This will ensure that any contamination that might occure is handled quickly. Since the fuel filter is inexpensive, and something you can do on a Saturday or Sunday, it's a piece of mind type of repair maintanence.
Where is the fuel filter located on my car or truck?
Depending on what kind of car or truck you have, and even the year of it, the location can be either next to the fuel tank which would require you to work under your car, or it would be located on your firewall in your engine bay. If you are unsure, you can ask in our forum, or simply follow the fuel line from your fuel tank to the front of the car.
