What is a brake drum? A brake drum is the metal casing that goes around brakes and brake shoes on a drum brake system. Imagine a round baking pan that your mom used to bake gingerbread in. Take that pan and cover two shoes lying on their side with the rubber soles facing outward so that the shoes laces are touching. When the brakes are suppressed, those shoes get moved outward pushing their rubber soles against the inside rim of the baking pan. That's how it works inside a car's drake drum with the brake shoes.
Can a brake drum go bad? It is rare, but a brake drum can go bad. It can be warped from prolonged use, it can have grooves dug into it from indicators, it can be weakened by overheating, or it can have sustained damage from a collision. It is not a common occurrence to replace a brake drum, but, if it is needed, they are relatively inexpensive compared the parts in other braking systems.
How do I know if it's going bad? When brake drums are worn or going bad, you will feel an odd sensation while braking. It's similar to pushing a shopping cart with a bad wheel, but you'll feel that warped sensation when trying to stop. Other indicators of a bad brake drum would include poor stopping ability, occasional brake lock up, or creaks and popping noises.
Can I replace my own brake drums? Replacing brake drums is one of the easier brake repair jobs. Once you remove your wheel, simply remove the outer drum which covers the brakes and replace it with the new drum. It's usually not required to bleed the brake drums. In some cars, you may need to remove the shoes to get to the drum, so please consult your owner's manual.
Can I extend the life of my drums? It is definitely possible to extend the life of your drums. Be sure to brake more smoothly while driving, don't let them get too hot to the point where you can smell them, pump your brakes or push them on and off to keep them cooler, and don't drive with your emergency brake on. On the maintenance side, have them checked regularly, always change your shoes right away when the indicator goes off, and see about getting your drums rotated.
