What is an exhaust manifold gasket?

An exhaust manifold gasket is a gasket that lies between the engine block and exhaust manifold at the point where they connect. It is designed and tested to withstand the incredibly high temperature of the engine block and to contain the strong pressure of emissions pushing their way through the motor and out to the manifold. The manifold gasket is typically attached to both surfaces with gasket sealer and then secured by the bolts that hold the manifold to the block.

What can go wrong with an exhaust manifold gasket?

Worn down by the heat and pressure that occurs in the motor and through to the manifold, the gasket can begin to wear down and allow leaks or spaces to form. The manifold gaskets are made of composite material that will usually hold up well to the demands of the engine, but on occasion, they can start to leak or tear. Other exhaust manifold problems occur as a result of human intervention. Examples would include a bad car accident, the gasket being improperly replaced after or during repairs, or mistakes made when moving the exhaust manifold around.

How do I know that I have a bad gasket?

There are only a few ways to discover that you have a problem with your exhaust manifold gasket. The most common indicator is a noise that comes out of the manifold and sounds like hot air escaping out a crease. The next most common indicator is an exhaust smell that you can detect in the front of the car and possibly in your passenger compartment. You may also experience possible engine overheating or see a visible leak of engine fluids or condensation on the ground under your car.

Does every car need an exhaust manifold gasket?

Believe it or not, not all cars need an exhaust manifold gasket. Newer cars quite often do not have gaskets because the engine and manifold surfaces are machined very smoothly and can create an adequate seal. Similar to cars with gaskets, the gasket-less applications can still experience leaks or spaces in the seal. In that case, it's a good idea to get a composite gasket designed especially for cars that did not have them in place out of the factory.

Can I replace the manifold gasket myself?

It is a fairly straightforward job to replace an exhaust manifold gasket. You start by making absolutely sure the engine and manifold have cooled down, remove the bolts that secure the manifold in place, pull the manifold off, wire brush or sand both connecting surfaces down (on the block and on the manifold), apply gasket sealer to both surfaces, place the gasket on the manifold, and replace the manifold and bolts. The difficult part is getting proper access to make this repair. Please consult your owner's manual or a local technician.
