What is a PCV valve?
The Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve, or PCV valve, is a valve that resides within the crankcase where the crankshaft is housed and protected. The valve allows gases and emissions, let into the crankcase through the pistons, to escape. If the valve was not present, the build up of pressure would exceed the limits of the crankcase. You may be thinking that pistons should not allow for emissions to pass into the crankcase as they have rings, boots, and seals to form a pressure tight system. This assumption is correct, but mainly in worn or damaged pistons, small amounts of emissions get through during the up and down stroke motion of the crank. The PCV valve is part of an overall ventilation system which redirects these leaked gases back into the intake manifold for additional air to aid in further combustion.

How do I know if my PCV valve is going bad?
You do not always get signs that your PCV valve is failing. That's why it's very important to keep up on factory recommended maintenance and replacement intervals. If there are any visible signs, you would experience rough idle, rough or sporadic sensation during acceleration, possible piston misfiring, and possible backfire of built up emissions. The car may also act and smell as if it were running “rich” which implies a heavier presence of fuel compared to air in the mixture needed for combustion.

How do I replace it?
The valve itself is not that difficult to replace. After accessing it, you would disconnect the breather tube, unscrew it from the crankcase, install the replacement by screwing it into the crank case, and then re-attach the breather tube making sure all connections were tightened adequately. The difficult part is accessing the PCV valve as it may require the removal of many other components in order to replace it. Consult your owner's manual or local dealer service department for more information.

When is the valve most important?
The PCV valve is under heaviest stress during acceleration as that is when the most emissions would be released from worn cylinders. That is also when you will most likely feel the effects of a worn PCV valve. At idle and full throttle, the PCV valve is almost useless as the force of the vacuum in those two states is greatest and emissions aren't usually a problem.

What's the best way to maintain the valve?
The best way to maintain your PCV vale is by listening to your parents' old adage about changing your oil every three thousand miles. PCV valves get worn by collecting dirt, grit, and engine particles from old and dirty oil. They can clog the valve and render it ineffective. Also, keep up on factory recommended maintenance schedules which include a replacement interval for a new PCV valve.
