What is a trunk strut?
A trunk strut is the arm or mechanism that operates the opening and closing of your trunk. It is usually not the only connector as trunks typically have hinges, so it facilitates the opening of the trunk by guiding opening speed, carrying the weight of the trunk lid, and holding the lid securely into place.

Do I really need one?
You absolutely need a trunk strut as they play a key role in allowing you access to your trunk. They carry the weight of the trunk lid which most people would not be able to lift without assistance. They do this by using a hydraulic piston, like a shock, to carry the weight. They also hold the heavy trunk lid firmly in place thus keeping drivers and passengers safe from a slamming trunk lid. Trunk struts are also essential to the longevity of the other trunk parts since they mediate the trunk opening and closing reducing damage done by slamming trunk lids.

Do trunk struts go bad?
Trunk struts do wear down and become less useful. This is usually due to prolonged and repeated use. It causes the hydraulic piston to wear down and lose compression. Very rarely, they can become detached at the connecting points and offer no assistance in accessing your trunk.

Are there different kinds?
There are several different kinds of trunk struts available. You can buy a stock or after market OEM replacement which will be made to the factory specifications for your particular vehicle. It will replace the original function as the strut as it existed before there were any problems. There are premium grade struts which are made of stronger materials and have a larger hydraulic cylinder. They last longer, can carry more weight, and have typically been tested more extensively. Finally, there are the automatic electric trunk strut applications for use with a car remote.

Can I repair a trunk strut myself?
Repairing a trunk strut is fairly easy on most vehicles. There are some vehicles that will block access to the strut or have confusing custom brackets. In that case, consult your owner's manual or a local dealership service department. For those with easy access, simply open your trunk, secure it in place making sure it will stay open once the struts are removed, remove the bolts for the old struts, and attach the new struts and bolts in their place.
