What is a sway bar link?
A sway bar is a u-shaped metal bar, or metal bars connected in the shape of a ‘u,' that link the right wheel assembly to the left wheel assembly in either the front or back of your vehicle. Connecting the two wheels in that fashion helps to transfer the weight, or body roll, of your car when going around corners where the momentum shifts. If the car is going to roll severely to the right, the sway bar helps to keep it balanced by redirecting some of that tension and weight back to the left. The bar helps in two ways by maintaining a straighter line between the two wheels in off camber circumstances while also absorbing some of the torque from the body through the steel and connectors. A sway bar link is only one piece of the overall sway bar. Sway bars today come in pieces and use these links to connect to the wheel assembly where older sway bars were a single piece either secured by brackets or welded to the assembly. The added connection points from sway bar links actually helps to absorb more of the energy from body roll.

How do I know if my sway bar link is worn out?
It can be tough to tell if your sway bar link is worn or failing. Be sure to visually inspect the link and entire sway bar on occasion to see if it looks too dirty, cracked, or warped from regular use. Outside of visual inspection, a worn sway bar link may creak or emit a cracking sound while going around corners or changes in elevation like speed bumps. It can also cause wheel chatter while driving and allow the body roll to occur which will tip more of the vehicle's weight to one side through corners. Even though it is rare, a worn sway bar link or sway bar can affect your wheel alignment and balance.

What can happen if the link breaks?
If the sway bar link experiences a complete failure, it can detach from the wheel assembly and the possibly the rest of the sway bar to drag on the ground and cause sparks or possibly interfere with your wheels. Those critical failures don't usually happen and you will simply feel the symptoms of increased body roll with chatter and creaking sounds.

How do I fix a worn sway bar link?
Replacing a defective or worn sway bar link can be pretty straightforward. After elevating your vehicle with a jack or lift, you can use a torque wrench to detach the link from the wheel housing and sway bar, replace it with the new link and rubber grommets, and re-attach everything with the torque wrench. Depending on your vehicle, there may be other components in the way which could make repair difficult and a good choice for a local mechanic or dealership. On the other hand, this is one of the easier suspension fixes that doesn't require the coil springs to be suppressed, the wheels to be removed, or the break lines to be removed and bled.

Is there a way to get better performance from my sway bar?
The sway bar is all about added performance and better handling. There are several upgrades available to make the car more balanced around corners and to create a sense of more equal weight distribution. Sway bars are available in different thicknesses or circumference and with different compositions. The thicker the metal means a more rigid ride. Links can also be purchased in thicker applications with bigger rubber grommets to soften the ride a bit. For an extremely rigid ride or for use on a race car, the sway bar can be welded for maximum hold and balance.
