How do you replace an air idle control valve?
Replacing an idle control valve can be a daunting task. For your specific application, we recommend to ask in our car forum for advice. Here we will describe the basic process for replacing your idle control valve. Please note that for different cars and trucks the process will not be the same.
Steps to replace your idle control valve
  1. You will want to begin by first gaining access to the idle control valve. In order to do this you will need to remove the air filter assembly, along with the air mass sensor and the air mass meter boot. Once you remove this whole assembly, you should have easy access to the throttle body.
  2. Remove the four bolts that secure the throttle body to the intake manifold.
  3. Usually on the bottom of the throttle body, on fuel injected cars, there is a idle control valve. To remove the old valve, simply unscrew or unbolt it.
  4. Bolt on the new valve, and reinstall everything. Make sure you replace your throttle body gasket at this time.
How can I tell if I need a new air idle control valve?
If your car has a rough idle or the idle cycles up and down, then chances are that you have a bad idle control valve. On modern vehicles, the purpose of the idle air control valve is to regulate your idle, and keep the idle smooth. The idle valve is controlled by the ECU or the computer, and when in gear the idle should be between 800 and 1000 rpm, and not in gear, between 700 and 900 rpm.

Will my check engine light come on when I need to replace this valve?
Not necessarily. Sometimes the idle won't be out of range, but still be rather annoying. If the check engine light does come on, it could also affect you being able to pass smog or emissions in your state.
