What is the wheel hub?

The wheel hub is a metal disc that is tightly secured to the axle and contains the wheel bearing as part of its connection to the axle. On the other side of the wheel hub, you will find a central lug nut in the very center with threaded rods sticking out typically in a five or six star pattern. These bolts or rods are what your rims sit on and what you attach your rim's lug nuts to.

Is a hub cap related to the wheel hub?

Hub cap, is indeed, related to the wheel hub. This is an older term that described wheel assemblies before there were such things as after market rims. On older cars, the rims that connected to the wheel hub and held the wheel in place exposed the center lug nut and bolts of the outer wheel hub. To hide these parts for aesthetics, they came up with a cap usually containing the manufacturer's logo that became known as the hub cap.

What can go wrong with a wheel hub?

The wheel hub is a solid steel or metal disc forged from one piece of metal. Its composition combined with a lack of any moving parts contained within the hub makes the wheel hub extremely durable and not easily susceptible to ordinary causes of damage. A wheel hub can become worn or warped in the area where the wheel bearing is seated. This can be bad as it may lead to the current bearing or future bearings to become unseated which could make the whole wheel fall off. Wheel hubs can also sustain damage on or around the bolts that secure the rim to the wheel. They may become bent or warped which can lead to rims that could also fall off. Beyond these concerns, it's very tough to damage a wheel hub. In bad car accidents, they may become cracked or broken and need to be replaced.

How do I know that I have a problem with my wheel hub?

A problem with the wheel hub in the area where the wheel bearing is seated will lead to similar symptoms to that of a worn or bad wheel bearing. That would include a grinding, whining, or squealing sound, and it could cause the sensation of a loose wheel with less response from the steering. For problems on the side of the wheel hub where the rim is connected, bent or warped rods will not only make it difficult to attach your rim, but it may lead to a bad tire wobble, steering difficulties, and the loss of alignment.

What can I do to increase the life of my wheel hub?

The answers here are pretty simple. The first would be regular maintenance of your wheel bearings to ensure there is no friction wear or damage between the parts. The next would be paying attention to your lug nut bolts by making sure they are tightened correctly and don't appear bent. Other important tasks include wheel alignment, wheel balance, and having your assembly checked if something occurs where you suspected that you could have damaged something with your wheel or suspension.
