What is a wheel bearing?

Either a more traditional ball bearing or a roller bearing, the wheel bearing is located inside the wheel hub and carries the weight of the vehicle from the axle. The axle connects directly to the wheel bearing and the wheels spin because of the lack of friction and lubrication. A roller bearing is a larger metal ring with either metal rollers, that are shaped like little cylinders, or ball bearings seated around the inside rim. A shaft or another ball bearing will sit inside of the ring touching the rollers or bearings thus using the rolling surface to reduce friction.

What is this "greasing” or "packing” I hear about with wheel bearings?

The terms "greasing” or "packing” mentioned in regards to wheel bearings are something that needs to be done for maintenance on older vehicles. In older cars, there is thick, grey colored bearing grease that is packed around the wheel bearing and needs to be replaced at regular intervals. Typically around every 24,000 miles, the bearings would need to removed or accessed and have generous amounts of lubrication bearing grease packed around the bearing. This keeps them safer from friction wear or damage. Today's vehicles have enclosed bearings that do not need to have maintenance in that fashion.

What can go wrong with a wheel bearing?

A wheel bearing could have a number of issues occur. The most common is friction wear or damage caused by many years of use or a lack of lubrication. Friction damage will cause the surface of the bearing to become scratched and rough which impedes the smooth spinning that bearings are supposed to offer. For those who have roller bearings, you can lose rollers or the bearings ring can actually crack. Another common bearing problem is to have it jarred loose or receive damage from a bad pothole or some other driving hazard.

How do I know that I have a wheel bearing problem?

There are several ways to diagnose a wheel bearing problem. A worn or broken wheel bearing will usually emit a noise such as a whining, grinding, or squealing. You may also feel the wheel become loose or less responsive while driving. Be sure to pay attention to popping noises or a lasting vibration that continues to resonate after you have gone over rough roads.

What can happen if I don't replace a bad bearing?

A bad bearing that is left unattended can lead to many problems. The simples of these problems would be the loss of your wheel alignment, uneven and additional wear to your tires, and possible damage to the wheel's rim or your axle. On the more serious side, you will notice leaked bearing grease, a substantial loss of steering control, and in extreme cases the wheel will actually fall off.
