In a car or truck that is either two wheel drive ( 2wd ) or four wheel drive ( 4wd ) or all wheel drive ( awd ),
the way the power of the engine gets transferred to the ground, is through the axles. On a front wheel drive car,
there are only axles, and no driveshaft. On a rear wheel drive car, there is a driveshaft that attaches to a rear
end, and that then connects to the two axles. On an all wheel drive awd or four wheel drive 4wd car or truck, you
have 4 axles, two in the front and two in the back, and depending on the design, you could have a driveshaft as
well.
Many times when a mechanic tells you that you need to replace your axles, what you really need to replace is the CV
boot. over the years, a CV boot could rip, causing grease to come out from the rip, and therefore allowing dirt
and grime in, which covers your CV joint, and makes the joint cause a lot of noise. We recommend in these cases to
get either a rebuilt or remanufactured axle, since it comes with new CV boots, or just to have your CV boot
replaced on your existing axle.
A driveshaft that needs to be replaced could make thumping noises and cause all sorts of problems when accelerating
or changing gears. If you need a driveshaft replacement, please check our catalog above for replacement
driveshafts and replacement driveshaft parts.
We also offer a forum for our users to discuss various components,
parts, and DIY on how to replace your axles, driveshaft, and related components, and also maintain their vehicles.
